The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has approved the first-ever AI-driven law firm in England and Wales -  Garfield.Law Ltd. This milestone authorisation marks a transformative moment in the legal sector, highlighting how artificial intelligence can responsibly deliver affordable, efficient, and regulated legal services.

Garfield.Law offers AI-powered litigation support for small claims, helping small and medium-sized businesses recover debts with streamlined guidance. What makes this development particularly noteworthy is that it adheres to full regulatory oversight, with safeguards for quality assurance, confidentiality, and supervision — a model the SRA sees as both innovative and cautious.

As Paul Philip, SRA Chief Executive, notes:

“Responsible use of AI by law firms could improve legal services, while making them easier to access and more affordable.”

With this step, the SRA signals openness to tech-enabled models that expand access to justice - while keeping consumer protection and professional accountability front and centre.
